IPC Assistant

 Key Responsibilities

1. Centre Cleaning and Hygiene Monitoring

• Daily and continuous cleaning schedules for clinical rooms, waiting areas, toilets, laboratories, and

procedure rooms.

• Ensure cleaning is conducted using approved disinfectants, dilution ratios, and methods.

• Conduct routine spot checks to confirm cleanliness, surface disinfection, and environmental hygiene

standards.

• Escalate infection risks and concerns to line manager immediately.


2. Waste Management and Disposal

• Ensure correct segregation of healthcare waste at point of generation, including sharps, infectious waste,

non-infectious waste, and pharmaceutical waste.

• Monitor correct use of colour-coded bins and liners.

• Ensure safe handling, temporary storage, and transfer of waste in line with IPC and environmental health

standards.

• Report unsafe waste practices, sharps injuries, or spill incidents promptly.


3. Sterilization and Decontamination Support

• Support correct cleaning, decontamination, and sterilisation of reusable instruments and equipment in line

with Centre protocols.

• Ensure instruments are processed using approved methods and documented appropriately.

• Monitor sterilisation logs, indicator use, and equipment cleanliness


4. Incident Reporting and Response

• Support immediate response to IPC incidents such as blood spills, body fluid exposure, needle-stick

injuries, or suspected infection outbreaks.

• Ensure incidents are reported, documented, and escalated according to MSSL incident management

procedures.

• Support follow-up actions, including cleaning, isolation measures, or referrals where required.


5. Documentation and Record Keeping

• Maintain IPC checklists, cleaning logs, waste tracking records, and sterilisation support records.

• Ensure documentation is completed accurately, timely, and kept securely.

• Support data collection for IPC audits, inspections, and supervision visits.


6. Support to Audits, Supervision and Compliance

• Support Centre IPC audits, regulatory inspections, and internal supervision visits.

• Prepare IPC areas and documentation for inspection.

• Support implementation and follow-up of corrective actions arising from audits or supervision

Qualifications and Experience

  • Formal training in infection prevention and control, environmental hygiene, or healthcare waste management
  • At least 1–3 years’ experience working in a healthcare, laboratory, or clinical environment is desirable
  • Experience in NGO or private healthcare settings is an advantage.

Competencies and Skills

  • Strong attention to cleanliness, detail, and procedural compliance.
  • Good understanding of infection risks and prevention practices.
  • Ability to observe, report, and follow procedures consistently.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Professional conduct, reliability, and integrity.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to clinical environments.

Working Conditions

  • The role is Centre-based with continuous movement across clinical and non-clinical areas.
  • The role involves exposure to healthcare environments and biological materials, requiring strict adherence to IPC protocols
  • The role may require extended hours during high-volume service periods or IPC incidents
