Laboratory Technician

Key Responsibilities
1. Laboratory Operations & Diagnostics
• Perform a wide range of laboratory tests including, but not limited to, pregnancy tests, urinalysis, malaria tests,
HIV screening, hepatitis, VDRL, and blood grouping.
• Ensure all specimens are correctly collected, labelled, processed, and recorded according to protocols.
• Maintain a reliable and timely diagnostic service to support clinical decision-making and treatment
2. Quality Assurance and Compliance
• Adhere strictly to national health and laboratory policies as well as MSI's global standards.
• Implement and maintain internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory services.
• Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs and proficiency testing
3. Infection Prevention and Safety
• Ensure effective infection prevention control (IPC) measures are practiced at all times.
• Maintain a sterile and hygienic work environment by adhering to proper waste disposal, equipment sterilization,
and safety protocols.
• Ensure safe collection, handling, and disposal of specimens and biohazardous materials.
4. Equipment and Supply Management
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment register including microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, and diagnostic

• Conduct routine calibration, servicing, and maintenance checks.
• Monitor stock levels of reagents, test kits, and consumables, and submit timely requisitions to prevent stockouts
5. Client Care and Confidentiality
• Uphold client confidentiality, dignity, and informed consent in all laboratory interactions.
• Communicate test results clearly and promptly to clinical staff for further client management.
• Maintain professionalism and a non-judgmental attitude toward clients at all times.
6. Data Recording and Reporting
• Accurately document all test results in client records and laboratory logs.
• Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly reports on laboratory activities and submit them to Centre Managers and
Laboratory Manager
• Contribute to audits and support clinical teams in case reviews and incident investigations
7. Teamwork and Capacity Building
• Work closely with clinical staff, nurses, and Centre Managers to ensure seamless service delivery.
• Support new staff orientation and share best practices in lab procedures and quality assurance.
• Participate in training and capacity-building activities as scheduled by MSSL.
Experience (essential/desirable)
- Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a clinical or medical laboratory setting (essential).
- Experience in diagnostic testing related to reproductive and sexual health services (desirable).
- Familiarity with IPC standards, quality systems, and diagnostic protocols in Sierra Leone (essential).
- Experience working with INGO, private clinic, or government health facility (desirable).
Qualifications (essential/desirable)
- BSc, Diploma or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science or Laboratory Technology (essential).
- Must be licensed and certified by the appropriate Sierra Leonean health regulatory body (essential).
- Advanced laboratory training or certifications (e.g. HIV Testing and Counselling, TB diagnostics) (desirable
Competencies and Skills
- Proficient in specimen collection, testing, and analysis.
- Knowledge of diagnostic tools for SRH-related diseases and conditions.
- Good understanding of laboratory data management and reporting.
- Equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Strong IPC and waste management practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Health Records Systems and other reporting tools.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Strong ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality.
- Effective communication and teamwork.
- Ability to work under pressure and in busy clinic settings.
- Problem-solving skills and initiative-taking.
